The future of timber measurement, driven by AI and innovation

At Mabema Wood, we’re in the middle of an exciting development journey. With our GPV solution, we’ve already revolutionized the determination of volumes for timber and pulpwood stacks, but we’re far from finished. We’re making major investments—combining AI, automation, and a clear objective: full automation within two years.

This is more than a technical upgrade. It’s a paradigm shift that will change how the entire industry works with measurement.

What does full automation mean - for us and for you? For us, full automation means:

  1. Fully automated volume measurement with no manual intervention.
  2. Identification of stack segmentation with such precision that manual post-checks become unnecessary.
  3. Automated measurement and calculation of diameter distribution across the entire stack.
  4. Identification of tree species in mixed loads.
80–90% accuracy today and soon over 95%
For stack segmentation, we’re already close to the goal: 85–90% accuracy today and soon over 95%, which means the segmentation becomes fully automated. That translates to less manual effort and higher efficiency—at a lower measurement cost.

In summary, full automation means top-tier measurement and classification, where the operator’s role is minimal and the process is reliable, fast, and safe.

Capacity that changes the game

Moving from manual stack measurement to automation is a dramatic shift:

  • From 10–15 minutes per load to under 2 minutes, resulting in
    a major capacity increase.
  • Higher availability, with measurement possible around the clock.
  • Less dependence on staffing, smoother flow, and happier drivers.
  • Higher accuracy with objective and consistent assessments.

For our customers, this is more than a time-saver—it’s a business advantage.

The technology behind the success

Our system is based on laser triangulation—a technique that provides unrivaled precision and sets the industry standard. Today, we already deliver the world’s most accurate and automated method for stack measurement and stack segmentation.

And with next-level AI, we’re taking further steps:

  • Detailed analysis of diameter distribution.
  • Automated alerts for rejection causes such as decay, buttress roots, and incorrect species.
  • Continuous learning that makes the system smarter over time.
  • We are developing a system for filtering and exporting process data from the measurements. The data can be used for follow-up, process control, or verifying the raw material entering your plant.

An investment that pays off — every day

Investing in GPV is about long-term thinking and investing in the future. You gain savings and efficiency from day one, and the value grows as the technology advances. Through our comprehensive service agreement, you also stay current with development—all updates and upgrades are included.

That means the system you install today won’t be the same system in five years—it will be even better. With Mabema as your partner, you become part of the innovation journey shaping the industry—and securing competitiveness for many years to come.

We’re stepping up—to deliver more

We’re now making one of our largest investments ever in the Wood business area. We’re investing in new competencies and a strengthened team to accelerate development. All this to ensure we remain at the forefront—and that you, as our customer, are always one step ahead.

At the same time, we’re both happy and grateful for the trust we’ve already earned. Over the past year, three new systems have been ordered: Nordanå and Bäckebron will be installed this autumn through Green Wood Sverige AB—a brand-new customer for Mabema. In 2026, an additional system will be installed for Södra Skogsägarna in Mörrum—their fourth. This is a strong testament to the appreciation our solutions receive and to the long-term relationships we build together with our customers.
